Frequently Asked Questions
Am I suitable?
Yes, if you meet the following:
- Age: 55-95 years
- Concern: Any memory-related change.
What is the duration of the study?
This is a 9-month-long study with a few visits at the beginning of the study, a 6-month
follow-up visit, and a 9-month follow-up visit.
What should I do during the study?
Participants will be using a new investigational at-home device that emits odors from
plant-based essential oils. This device was designed to help prevent the development and
progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Who will see me during the study?
Medical professionals and trained research associates will take care of you throughout the
study. An MRI will be performed free of cost at the start and end of the study. You will also
receive a consultation with a specialist.
What type of device is this?
It is a tabletop device that you can use in your home at a time that is convenient to you.
Will I be compensated for participating in the study?
Yes, study participation is voluntary and is compensated.
A clinical research study to test a new investigational treatment program – the computerized olfactory training (COT) program – which was created to prevent the development of dementia in people who have early signs of memory loss, known as mild cognitive impairments (MCI) and people who have early Alzheimer’s dementia. COT uses naturally occurring essential or plant oils and psychophysical tasks to maintain activation of all the olfactory structures with the goal of reducing the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

The essential oils we use are approved for human consumption by the FDA and are classified as Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS). We also discovered that participants did not experience or report serious adverse (i.e., bad) reactions to these oil scents. Therefore, we are increasing the number of participants with MCI and early Alzheimer’s disease in this next phase of the study, to know whether this new investigational treatment (i.e., a treatment that has not received full FDA approval) will significantly improve memory, reduce levels of biomarkers (i.e., biological signs) of Alzheimer’s and prevent brain loss compared to placebo treatment (i.e., a device that looks like COT, but does not have the oil scents in COT).
